Now that we've outlined our process, let's dig a bit deeper into each step.
1. Project goals (kickoff meeting)
In this initial stage, we identify the website’s end goal, usually in close collaboration with you, the client or other stakeholders. Questions to explore and answer in this stage of the process include:
- Who is the site for?
- What do they expect to find or do there?
- Is this website’s primary aim to inform, to sell, or to amuse?
- Does the website need to clearly convey a brand’s core message, or is it part of a wider branding strategy with its own unique focus?
- What competitor sites, if any, exist, and how should this site be inspired by/different than, those competitors?
If these questions aren’t all clearly answered in the brief, the whole project can set off in the wrong direction.
This is the stage where we create a detailed timeline/plan to ensure that the project stays on time and within budget. We accomplish this through the use of a contract and a very detailed project plan to ensure that no "scope creep" happens.
3. Sitemap and wireframe creation
The sitemap provides the foundation for any well-designed website. It helps to give a clear idea of the website’s information layout and explains the relationships between the various pages and content.
The next step is to build the wireframe. Wireframes provide a framework for showing the site’s visual design and content elements, and can help identify potential challenges and gaps with the sitemap.
Although a wireframe doesn’t contain any final design, it does act as a guide for how the site will look.
4. Content creation
Content serves two essential functions:
1. Content drives engagement and action
Content engages readers and drives them to take the actions necessary to fulfill a site’s goals. It needs to keep the visitor entertained and intrigued in order for them to stay on your website. We help create this content with you to ensure it is geniune to your brand.
Content creates the visibility for search engines to find your website. Creating and focusing all content on certain keywords allows your website to rank higher in search results and get your business more online visitors which in turn means more customers. 5. Visual design elements
This is one of our favorite parts of the process as we get to design to look of the final website. This part of the design process will often be shaped by your existing brand elements (or ones we create), color choices, and logos. A great visual design will help you stand out from your competitors and show just how unique your company is.
Once the site has all its visuals and content, it's time for testing. We ensure the website looks great on all devices and browsers (desktop, tablet & mobile). We also ensure that all links are functioning correctly and there are no errors in the code.
This is everyones favorite part of the process. After all of the hardwork and long hours put in, it's time to show the website to the world. Although it's not the end of the website process as websites are a living thing that require upkeep (content updates, new features, etc) it certianly is an important and exciting day.
